Big Rose Colony

Big Rose Colony is situated in the Rural Municipality of Biggar, with the colony and its school located roughly 20 km south of the town of Biggar in Saskatchewan’s grain‑ and livestock‑growing belt. It emerged in the early 1980s as part of the west‑country cluster of Hutterite colonies that spread across southwest and west‑central Saskatchewan during that period. The colony follows the typical Hutterite pattern of communal living and shared farming, with families working together in fields, barns, shops, and kitchens while holding land and machinery in common.

Agriculture at Big Rose is built around mixed farming. Like other Saskatchewan colonies, Big Rose focuses on grain and livestock production, contributing crops and animal products to the wider prairie economy. The colony operates a Saskatchewan Health Authority‑licensed slaughterhouse, Big Rose Colony Slaughterhouse, located at SE 15‑34‑15 W3M, which allows on‑site processing of meat under provincial inspection for commercial sale.

Within the colony, a modern communal kitchen and dining facility supports daily meals for the community, and Big Rose selected Halton Capture Jet exhaust hoods for its kitchen ventilation system, an example of how the colony incorporates up‑to‑date equipment into its infrastructure. Education is provided through Big Rose Colony School under the Sun West School Division, with a small rural school serving colony children and integrating provincial curriculum with their own community life. Together, these elements make Big Rose Colony a well‑established, modern prairie farming community with strong capacity in both primary production and on‑farm meat processing.
