Spring View Hutterite Colony is located by Gem, in southern Alberta’s County of Newell, within a landscape of prairie fields, irrigation works, and small rural communities. Established in 1979 as a daughter colony of Bow City Colony, it has since become the mother colony of Armada Colony, helping extend the Hutterite presence across the region.
The colony is recognized in dairy industry reports as Spring View Colony Farming Co. Ltd., indicating an active Holstein dairy operation integrated with its cropping program. Fields around the colony support feed and cash crops suited to the area’s climate and soils, balancing irrigated and dryland acres as is common in the Gem–Bow City corridor. This mixed‑farming structure allows Spring View to grow forages and grains for its cattle while marketing surplus production into broader commodity channels.
Like other Hutterite communities, Spring View is organized around communal living and shared work: families live in close proximity, share meals from a central kitchen, and cooperate in barns, parlours, machine shops, and fields rather than operating as separate family farms. Decision‑making and resources are pooled, while children attend a colony school that follows Alberta curriculum alongside German and religious instruction, tying education closely to daily life and seasonal farm work.
With its roots in the Bow City colony network, its dairy‑centred mixed farm, and its location in one of Alberta’s key irrigated farm belts, Spring View Colony is a steady contributor to the agricultural and social fabric of the Gem area.
