Cabbage is one of those vegetables that rewards buying it fresh and buying it right. A dense, tight head from a colony garden has a crispness and a clean, mild flavour that limp grocery store cabbage wrapped in plastic for the fourth day never gets close to.

Summerland Colony grows cabbage in their colony garden near Carmangay in Vulcan County, Alberta. Established in 2021 as a daughter colony of Clear Lake Colony, Summerland is building out fresh produce operations to serve nearby towns and customers across Alberta. These heads are harvested when they are fully formed, dense, and at their peak, and they are available through Hutterite Marketplace for as long as the harvest runs.

For everyday kitchen use. A single colony-grown cabbage head goes a long way in a household, and having one fresh on hand changes the way you cook through the week. Slice it raw into slaws and salads. Braise it low and slow with butter and caraway. Stuff the leaves. Chop it into soups and stews. Ferment a jar of quick sauerkraut that is ready in a week.

20 lb Bag
For the serious buyer. The 20 lb bag is built for canners, fermenters, and families or colony kitchens that go through cabbage at volume. A 20 lb purchase at colony price during peak season is the starting point for a proper batch of homemade sauerkraut, a winter’s worth of coleslaw mix stored in the freezer, or kimchi made in a quantity that lasts through the cold months.
